Create a mutual driving agreement to help with driver safety.

Teens and parents should sign the agreement together after discussing the following:

  • Obeying all traffic laws.Research state or local traffic laws such as the speed limit in school zones, highways and on neighborhood streets.
  • Wearing safety belts and requiring passengers to do so also. Research how many injuries occur as a result of crashes when people were wearing safety belts vs. when not wearing safety belts.
  • Alcohol or drug use. Check out Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) or Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) to read about statistics on crashes caused by drivers under the influence.
  • Talking or texting while driving. Check out Distraction.gov. This U.S Department of Transportation site offers valuable information about distracted driving. The National Safety Council also provides additional information on distracted driving and how to prevent it.
