National Health Education Standards (NHES) 9-12

Standard 2: Students will analyze the influence of family, peers, culture, media, technology, and other factors on health behaviors.
2.12.2. Analyze how the culture supports and challenges health beliefs, practices, and behaviors.

You always study vocabulary, but this time let’s make it yours and make it fun. Create an Interactive Vocabulary Journal (IVJ)*, using the unit vocabulary below. You may use other resources you find in and outside of class. For example, you may take your own photographs or draw your own caricatures to incorporate into your IVJ. [* IV: An interactive journal in which students use the Internet, Discovery Education videos, images, articles, interviews they conduct, to define each term — in this manner, vocabulary is no longer the "drill and kill", but rather, "sticky" and personal and unique to each student; IVJs are cumulative so that at a course's or semester's conclusion, students have created a vocabulary portfolio they can share with classmates.]

Introductory Activity:

Using your Interactive Vocabulary Journal (IVJ), create a Digital Pamphlet, which will digitize the traditional pamphlet using videos, music, images, etc. which they can share not only with classmates but also their school via the school's technologies. Your Digital Pamphlet will provide for other teens a quick but engaging review of safe driving tips. Share your Digital Pamphlet first with your class and then find a mall and ask if you may distribute your Digital Pamphlets there.
